TNSC Fall Regional Art Show and Sale! "Falling for Art" |
The Thompson Nicola Shuswap Chapter (TNSC) of the Federation of Canadian Artists proudly presents its 20th Annual Juried Regional Fine Art Show. This prestigious event, held at the Old Courthouse Gallery, showcases the finest artists from Kamloops, Shuswap, and the Okanagan, offering an immersive experience in a diverse array of artworks, genres, mediums, and subject matter. Submissions open September 22nd!
Date: October 22 – November 2
Time: Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm
Location: The Old Courthouse Gallery, 7 Seymour St W, Kamloops
Awards: Three top awards and three Honourable Mentions will be presented. Attendees can also participate by voting for three “People’s Choice Awards.”

Lalita Hamill Workshop - October 5/6, 2024
We are bringing Lalita to you in October to further our very popular Foundation Skills Program. This weekend workshop will be all about "Working from Photographs”. Artists use reference photos in many different ways depending on their practice. It is an essential tool for any artist serving as a reference to fill in the gaps where our memory or imagination may need a little inspiration. Lalita will expand on the use of photos in your artistic practice and show you how to get the most out of your pictures. More details to follow in the next couple of months! Would you like to practice your drawing skills in a casual, friendly atmosphere? Join us for Life Drawing sessions. We will provide models who pose unclothed or draped who range in age, gender and body shape. All levels of drawing skills are welcome from "I've never done this before but I would like to try" to the advanced. A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING MEMBERS!A big welcome back to our returning members who renewed their membership over the summer months - Terry Greenhough, Christopher Orr and Yvonne Reddick! And, a warm hello to our new members, Angie McIntosh, Chris Williams, Jackie Ziehe, Maxine Grass and Vaughn Butland! We look forward to your participation in our events and seeing the creativity and expertise you bring to our Chapter. Together, let's continue to share our passions and celebrate our diverse talents. SAYING THANK YOU TO CATHIE PETERS!

Regrettably, Cathie Peters has advised her Executive Team that she will be stepping down from her role as TNSC Treasurer at the end of the 2024/2025 term. Cathy was elected as Treasurer 20 years ago! At that time, the Chapter was run by Trish Armstrong, AFCA, and Debbie Lively, AFCA, along with a collegial group of others including Sharon Olfert, Sandy Conway, Werner Braun and Bill Lee, AFCA. Over the years, the TNSC faded away but due to the dedication of several talented local artists it was resurected. There were lunch meetings, lots of laughs, friendships were made and the Chapter was once again thriving with shows and workshops. Cathie has served as Treasurer, Co-Chair and President. In Cathie's words "my journey has been rewarding and my time on the Board of Directors has been a gift... so many members have stepped up to help carry the load and enrich the experience for all... I value the friendships I have made. A special thank you to the current stalwart of Executive Members." Cathie plans to continue her membership with the TNSC. We thank her for her dedication, expertise and leadership. We certainly look forward to seeing more of her art in our shows and her participation in our events. Thank you Cathie! |
SUMMER PLEIN AIR DAZE!
The second TNSC Summer Plein Air paint-out was spectacular! We met at the Columbia Street Look-out and what a view it was! The sun provided beautiful light against the hills and deepened the reflections in the river. Never tried Plein Air before? Don't worry - everyone at every level is welcome to attend! Join in on the fun and hone your observation skills of nature at its best! Join us for next outdoor painting!

ART IN THE PARK - TNSC MEMBERSHIP BOOTH

The TNSC hosted a membership booth at Art in the Park this year. Art in the Park is Kamloops biggest and most attended art fair and 2024 did not disappoint! The weather was perfect and over 4,000 people came out to celebrate both Canada Day and the vibrant art community we have in Kamloops. We were thrilled to have so many people drop by our booth to talk "art" and the benefits of becoming a member with the Federation of Canadian Artists and the TNSC! It was a very encouraging day and we hope to see some new faces join our group in the very near future. All in all the day was a success! A big shout out of thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and the Kamloops Arts Council for a great event!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
As you have read in this newsletter, Cathie Peters is stepping down from our Executive Team. She has been a valued member of the TNSC for many years and her contributions and dedication have not gone unnoticed. She has given so much of her time and energy to make sure our Chapter thrives. She was instrumental on getting me up and running as President and I thank her for her leadership. You can well imagine the shoes that we need to fill to replace Cathie, but we are so very much hoping that one of you will come forward and give it a shot! Do you have basic bookkeeping skills and a desire to be part of the TNSC Executive Team? We are looking for someone to take over the position of Treasurer for the 2025/2026 term. Duties include paying bills, writing cheques for shows and awards, depositing cash to the bank, booking venues for shows and keeping a record of expenses and income. If this is something you feel you could do, please contact Elaine at president@tnsc.ca to talk about it! Remember... we will only have an active and thriving Chapter with the help and engagement of our members! |

Cathy Tetarenko has three paintings on display at the Grand Hotel in Sun Peaks. Be sure to stop by and see all the amazing artwork on display, thanks to the efforts of ArtZone Sun Peaks! Way to go Cathy!
Three of our members, Elaine Burns, Patricia House and Cathy Tetarenko, attended this year's Grand Prix of Art held in Steveston along the Historic Riverfront Trail. The event attracted 150 artists who took part in a plein air race that allowed for three hours to complete a painting and return it to the exhibition hall for display. Over 4,000 spectators and art collectors came to cheer on the artists and purchase art. Here is the work created by our artists. It really gives you a sense of the Steveston atmosphere, doesn't it?! Congratulations on a job well done artists!

ART TIPS AND TRICKS TO IMPROVE YOUR ART!

Leading Lines: Guiding the Viewer’s Eye
Leading lines are a powerful compositional tool that directs the viewer's gaze through your painting, creating a sense of movement and depth. These lines can be actual lines within the artwork or implied lines formed by shapes, colors, or edges.
How to Use Leading Lines:
1. Identify Natural Lines: Look for natural lines in your subject matter, such as roads, rivers, tree branches, or architectural elements.
2. Guide the Eye: Arrange these lines to lead the viewer’s eye towards the focal point of your painting. Lines that converge or lead to a specific area can draw attention to important elements.
3. Create Depth: Use leading lines to create a sense of depth and perspective. Diagonal lines, in particular, can add dynamism and draw the viewer into the scene.
4. Balance and Flow: Ensure that the lines create a balanced flow, avoiding abrupt stops that can disrupt the viewer’s journey through the artwork.
Example: In a landscape painting, a winding path or a river can lead the viewer’s eye from the foreground into the background, towards a distant mountain or a setting sun. In a portrait, the direction of the subject’s gaze or the lines of their clothing can guide the viewer to the face or eyes.
By thoughtfully incorporating leading lines, you can enhance the narrative and emotional impact of your painting, making it more engaging and immersive for the viewer.🎨✨
