ART TIPS AND TRICKS TO IMPROVE YOUR ART!

Use Your Phone's Camera to Compose

How many times have you set up to paint only to realize you are overwhelmed by the landscape? We all need a way to simplify the complexity in front of us. Turn on your camera and you have a smart viewfinder to test out compositions. Snap photos and compare what works best! You can even turn on the gridlines:
Simplify Values with Black and White
Values can be trick to figure out. Make it easy on yourself by snapping a photo in black and white. Now you don't have to sort out values and color at the same time. Start with your values. To compose your painting, figure out your hierarchy of values first and then deal with colors later!

Step Back OR Snap a Pic

Sargent was famous for standing back and attacking the canvas. This way he could clearly see his painting as a whole from further back. Instead of dancing like Sargent, you can use the camera on your phone to look at the image as if you were 20 feet away. The image becomes tiny and you can really see how your painting is working as a whole.
