The way you move and use a tool such as a palette knife or brush contributes substantially to your artistic ‘style’ or ‘voice’. If your marks are heavy-handed, tentative, sloppy, unintentional, uninteresting, and/or overworked, you are not living up to your full artistic potential.

Those of you ready to take your brushwork and mark-making to the next level of expressiveness, join Lalita as she guides participants through a series of step by step demos and exercises, to be applied to several small or medium studies.

Main topics will include the following:

  • Planning vs experimentation
  • Applying paint with a palette knife
  • Grips, stances, gestures and pressure
  • Mixing colour on the palette vs on the canvas
  • Edges & eye flow
  • Hesitant vs confident marks
  • Preventing overworking
  • Creating variety within unity
  • Fundamentals of abstraction
  • Use of other tools for mark-making
  • What to do when things go ‘sideways’

ABOUT LALITA

Lalita Resized

Lalita Hamill is a professional fine artist living in Langley, BC, Canada.  She discovered her artistic abilities as a young adult during the final year of her Philosophy degree at the University of Victoria. Subsequent years of drawing led to four years of study at the Vancouver Academy of Art, where she received instruction by classically trained painters.

Lalita specializes in oil and is also skilled at acrylics, watercolours, and drawing media. She is most well known for her award-winning figures, portraits, and still lifes. By exploring the human condition through emotive figures and narratives, Lalita's artwork inspires viewers to reflect on who they are, how they relate to their environment and others, and what really matters.  With over thirty years teaching experience, Lalita is a well respected teacher, mentor, and art assessor. On account of the success of her contemporary atelier program at her studio in Walnut Grove, Lalita was asked to design the Foundations Program for the Federation of Canadian Artists.

We are excited to bring watercolour artist James Koll to our meeting.  James will demonstrate an approach he often uses in plein-air painting that takes advantage of both the transparent properties of watercolour and the opaqueness of gouache.

James Koll

James is a Burnaby-born artist focused largely on watercolours since acquiring a passion for this medium while attending the Commercial Art Program at Capilano College. He is now focused full-time on fine art, exhibiting his work in galleries and group shows and often teaching workshops and classes. He has been awarded senior signature status in the Federation of Canadian Artists.

James is best known for his highly detailed and meticulously executed watercolours created in the studio. He is also a frequent practitioner of plein air painting and the more spontaneous and impressionistic approach it demands.

TNSC DEMO DAY RECAP - BLIND BAY, OCTOBER 14

We had an excellent turn out for our Demo Day in Blind Bay. Our guest was Krystyna Laycraft and it was a super fun morning watching her make a collage.  We took that inspiration and tried our own hand at collage.  The artwork produced was incredible - everyone had such a different piece of art by the end of the morning.  A big thank you to Krystyna for sharing her expertise and good humour!  Over lunch, we talked about upcoming events in our Chapter and artists shared information about their work and exhibitions.  We held our critique session - there is certainly some incredible artwork being done by artists in our Chapter!

OUR NEXT DEMO DAY AND INFORMATION SHARING IS BY ZOOM ON NOVEMBER 15TH AT 6:30PM

ART TIPS AND TRICKS TO IMPROVE YOUR ART!

Painting tip from Debbie Lively ~ When starting a painting, we tend to focus on details that we see rather than the larger shapes of value. We then tend to think detail and grab a smaller brush...Instead, squint and look for large shapes of value and grab a bigger brush and paint in larger shapes first.  Thanks Debbie!

Let's Talk - FCA STANDARDS

This month's topic:

COPYRIGHT AND FEDERATION STANDARDS- USING PHOTOGRAPHS

We are often approached with the question of appropriate use of photographs to create art that we are submitting to juried shows.  Can I use my own reference photo? Can I use an amateur photographers photo?  Can I use a professional photographers photo?

While using photos as reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, making substantive use of stock imagery or photos taken by professional photographers is not permissible, even with their permission. Reference photos must be taken by the artist themselves or provided to them by an amateur photographer with their express consent. Stock images may only be referred to for anatomical study and must be incidental to the completed artwork to be permissible. The FCA seeks to display artworks that are original examples of an artist's technical skill, ability to compose images, as well as to work creatively. Because of this, artwork created in courses and workshops are not eligible for submission to juried exhibitions. All submissions that appear to be in violation of copyright law will also be rejected. For more information, please go to: FCAMemberResources

FCA ONLINE MENTORSHIPS

Drawing 101 - Accurate Oberservation with Mark Anthony

Workshop Overview (6 Sessions): October 31 – December 5, ONLINE ZOOM

The act of manual drawing is our most immediate response to our visual world as it equally challenges our intellectual and intuitive interpretation, our visual comprehension and our ability to efficiently express what we see. The lingering challenge for every representational artist is to work live using a complex abstract form as a subject. The figure and the head in various frontal and foreshortened attitudes remain among the most difficult. This rich program offers an in depth exploration into practical and fundamental visual skills for every artist as well as a controlled progressive approach to drawing. More Information and to Register:  DRAWING101 Members: $290.00 Non-Members: $340.00

Online Critique with Leanne Christie SFCA

Wednesday, November 22nd, 4-6pm, Online Zoom To get to that “next level” you’ll sometimes need the constructive feedback of an experienced critic/fellow artist to drive your work forward. Critiques will help you grow as an artist and help you develop your work. Hear what is working in your art and ask for input on your current challenges. You’ll receive an overall evaluation of your artwork's strengths and weaknesses and a clear idea of how to move forward with your art by FCA Senior Member Leanne Christie.  Members: $35.00Non-Members: $40.00 More information and Register:  ONLINECRITIQUE
