The way you move and use a tool such as a palette knife or brush contributes substantially to your artistic ‘style’ or ‘voice’. If your marks are heavy-handed, tentative, sloppy, unintentional, uninteresting, and/or overworked, you are not living up to your full artistic potential.
Those of you ready to take your brushwork and mark-making to the next level of expressiveness, join Lalita as she guides participants through a series of step by step demos and exercises, to be applied to several small or medium studies.
Main topics will include the following:
ABOUT LALITA
Lalita Hamill is a professional fine artist living in Langley, BC, Canada. She discovered her artistic abilities as a young adult during the final year of her Philosophy degree at the University of Victoria. Subsequent years of drawing led to four years of study at the Vancouver Academy of Art, where she received instruction by classically trained painters.
Lalita specializes in oil and is also skilled at acrylics, watercolours, and drawing media. She is most well known for her award-winning figures, portraits, and still lifes. By exploring the human condition through emotive figures and narratives, Lalita's artwork inspires viewers to reflect on who they are, how they relate to their environment and others, and what really matters. With over thirty years teaching experience, Lalita is a well respected teacher, mentor, and art assessor. On account of the success of her contemporary atelier program at her studio in Walnut Grove, Lalita was asked to design the Foundations Program for the Federation of Canadian Artists.

We look forward to another year filled with art and creativity! Happy Painting! Elaine
Painting tip from Debbie Lively ~ When starting a painting, we tend to focus on details that we see rather than the larger shapes of value. We then tend to think detail and grab a smaller brush...Instead, squint and look for large shapes of value and grab a bigger brush and paint in larger shapes first. Thanks Debbie!
Let's Talk - FCA STANDARDS
This month's topic:
COPYRIGHT AND FEDERATION STANDARDS: - USING PHOTOGRAPHS
We are often approached with the question of appropriate use of photographs to create art that we are submitting to juried shows. Can I use my own reference photo? Can I use an amateur photographers photo? Can I use a professional photographers photo?
While using photos as reference for painting is a long-held accepted practice, making substantive use of stock imagery or photos taken by professional photographers is not permissible, even with their permission. Reference photos must be taken by the artist themselves or provided to them by an amateur photographer with their express consent. Stock images may only be referred to for anatomical study and must be incidental to the completed artwork to be permissible. The FCA seeks to display artworks that are original examples of an artist's technical skill, ability to compose images, as well as to work creatively. Because of this, artwork created in courses and workshops are not eligible for submission to juried exhibitions. All submissions that appear to be in violation of copyright law will also be rejected. Drawing 101 - Accurate Oberservation with Mark Anthony
Workshop Overview (6 Sessions): October 31 – December 5, ONLINE ZOOM
The act of manual drawing is our most immediate response to our visual world as it equally challenges our intellectual and intuitive interpretation, our visual comprehension and our ability to efficiently express what we see. The lingering challenge for every representational artist is to work live using a complex abstract form as a subject. The figure and the head in various frontal and foreshortened attitudes remain among the most difficult. This rich program offers an in depth exploration into practical and fundamental visual skills for every artist as well as a controlled progressive approach to drawing.
