Expressive Mark-Making Workshop With Lalita Hamill
For More Information and to Register : LALITAHAMILLWORKSHOP
The TNSC is once again hosting a workshop with Lalita Hamill. Continuing on the theme of foundational skills, this workshop will focus on "Expressive Mark Making".
The way you move and use a tool such as a palette knife or brush contributes substantially to your artistic ‘style’ or ‘voice’. If your marks are heavy-handed, tentative, sloppy, unintentional, uninteresting, and/or overworked, you are not living up to your full artistic potential.
Those of you ready to take your brushwork and mark-making to the next level of expressiveness, join Lalita as she guides participants through a series of step by step demos and exercises, to be applied to several small or medium studies.
Main topics will include the following:
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
I just returned from a plein air adventure in Montana and Yellowstone Park. What an amazing journey! There were so many beautiful scenes to paint that it was hard to narrow down the choices! Having participated in the TNSC Summer Plein Air Days really gave me the confidence to get out in the big world and experience plein air painting with other artists from around the globe. I highly recommend joining us next year if you have the desire to plein air paint. It is a great way to get your feet wet! Now, be sure to check out our Fall Fine Art Show! What a variety of artwork on display. The calibre of talent from our local and regional artists is outstanding. Comments or Questions? Drop me a note @president@tnsc.ca Happy Painting! Elaine

Ashcroft Plein Air Weekend and the FCA Retreat
Patricia House spent a week plein air painting in September, participating in two events.
The Winding River Arts Society reinvigorated their annual plein air event September 15 to 17. A wonderful weekend to paint where you would like (they provide some excellent suggestions) and enjoy some great food! The weekend rounds off with a show and sale open to the community - several sales were made, including two of mine! Both were painted of the Desert Hills Farm's pumpkin patch.
The annual FCA retreat was held at the Flying U Ranch on Green Lake, Sepember 17 to 22. The ranch was an excellent rustic venue with lots of ambiance to complement their great food and staff. Painting locations were both on the ranch and nearby in the Little Arrowhead and Sunset View Provincial Parks. The four instructors (Perry Haddock, Jack Turpin, Ann Willsie and Maria Johannsonn) were knowledgable and entertaining. The week rounded out with a show and sale on the last night. Several sales were made as well including one of mine, the first painting of the week which captured sunlight filtering through aspens on a hillside. Looking forward to possibly going to Bamfield next year!
The TNSC is excited to be offering another workshop with Lalita Hamill. Continuing on the theme of foundational skills, this workshop will focus on "Expressive Mark-Making".

I love the way lights glow from windows in the evening! They are so inviting and there's a feeling of coziness. In this workshop I'll be teaching you some fun new painting techniques. You'll learn colour mixtures for a darker but colourful night time scene, how to merge different hues of the same value (for excitement and interest!), an emphasis on edges and how to soften or accentuate them, how to add sparkle with a palette knife, brushwork for a much more impressionistic style and more! Class limit 12 Contact: Debbie Lively @debbiemilnerlively@gmail.com

John Singer Sargent's Carmela Bertanga with Michael Britton
October 24 - November 28
Paintings that are as fresh as hot biscuits are oft painted with an economy of succinct, expressive brush strokes rendered with a sympathetic correspondence to the underlying form and structure of the head. Michael Britton’s six session Zoom workshop begins by introducing you to the practice of spotting color values; a tactile practice of rendering three-dimensional form with colour rather than the common illustrative narration.
You’ll be studying Sargent’s understood methodology of portrait painting vis-a-vis copying his engaging portrait of Carmella Bertagna (1879) life-sized.
